The Building Before the Hotel
A landmark of Christchurch’s post-war ambition. Completed in 1960, the building now known as The Muse Art Hotel began life as the Canterbury Terminating
Building Society building — the first large-scale office building constructed in Christchurch following the Second World War. Designed by celebrated
Christchurch architect Peter Beaven in association with B.J. Ager, it marked a significant moment in the city’s architectural evolution and helped define a new
generation of modern commercial buildings.
For decades, the building served as the headquarters of the Canterbury Building Society while becoming recognised as one of Peter Beaven’s earliest and most
influential commercial works. Its clean modernist lines and distinctive architectural character contributed to what would later become known as the “Christchurch
style” – an approach to architecture that reflected the city’s unique identity rather than following international trends.
When the Canterbury earthquakes forever changed Christchurch’s skyline, many significant buildings were lost. This one remained.
Rather than being demolished, the decision was made to preserve one of the city’s important architectural landmarks. A comprehensive restoration and seismic
strengthening programme carefully balanced modern engineering with respect for Peter Beaven’s original vision, strengthening the building to 100% of the New
Building Standard while retaining many of the architectural features that define its character today.
The result is more than a restored building. It is a landmark that has continued to evolve with Christchurch itself, honouring its past while embracing a new future as The Muse Art Hotel.
The Art Within The Muse
Celebrating the artists who continue Christchurch’s story.
Architecture gave this building its identity. Today, local artists give it its voice. The transformation into The Muse Art Hotel was never intended to simply create
another boutique hotel in Christchurch. Instead, it became an opportunity to celebrate the creativity that has always been part of Christchurch’s character by inviting local artists to shape the experience of every guest who walks through its doors.
Each floor has been entrusted to a different Christchurch artist, whose work extends beyond the walls of a gallery and into the spaces guests move through
every day. From the moment the lift doors open, each level reveals its own creative identity, offering a new perspective inspired by the people, stories and
landscapes that define this city.
No two floors are the same. Each reflects the individual style, influences and artistic voice of its resident artist, creating a collection that is uniquely
Christchurch and uniquely The Muse.
For guests, this means every stay offers something slightly different. Whether discovering a favourite piece in the corridor, noticing the details within your room
or simply appreciating the changing atmosphere from one floor to the next, the experience becomes more than accommodation. It becomes an invitation to
connect with the creativity that continues to shape Christchurch today.
